What Is Master Scuba Diver?
PADI's Highest Recreational Achievement
Less than 2% of recreational divers ever earn the Master Scuba Diver rating. It's not just a certification — it signals that you've completed serious training, logged meaningful dives, and developed the skills and mindset to handle almost anything underwater.
Our program gives you a structured, guided path to get there — with a cohort of fellow divers, expert instruction, and gear expertise backing you every step of the way.
What MSD Requires
- ✓ Open Water Diver certification
- ✓ Advanced Open Water certification
- ✓ Rescue Diver certification
- ✓ Emergency First Response (EFR)
- ✓ 5 PADI Specialty certifications
- ✓ 50+ logged dives
- ✓ Passion for diving and the ocean
The Program Framework
Three Pillars. One Purpose.
Skill: Train like a Master
Through a structured training plan, you will enjoy quality dives and immediate feedback to increase your skills, awareness and safety in the water and prepare you for any adventure to come!
Self-Confidence: Dive your own gear, own your dive
Diving your own gear builds muscle memory. When your gear becomes "invisible" because it fits and functions perfectly, you stop worrying about your equipment and start focusing on the adventure.
Stewardship: Protect what you dive
Become a PADI Torchbearer -- taking action to protect the ocean we love through conservation, education and responsible diving practices. Become the kind of diver the ocean needs.
Choose Your Track

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I just got certified. Is it too soon to join?
Not at all — this is actually the ideal time. The program is designed to build directly on your Open Water foundation. You'll advance faster when the fundamentals are fresh and the habits haven't been set yet.
How long does the program take to complete?
Most students finish in 6–12 months, depending on their starting point, schedule, and which track they choose. The cohort model gives you flexibility to set a pace that works for your life.
What's the difference between Local and Travel tracks?
Local MSD focuses on Mid-Atlantic skills — drysuits, wreck diving, search & recovery — ideal if you dive locally or are considering going pro. Travel MSD is built for warm-water adventures with specialties like underwater photography, fish ID, and shark conservation.
Which specialties are included for each track?
If you are doing the full Local Track, you will earn 9 PADI Specialties: PADI AWARE, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drysuit, Navigation, Wreck, Search & Recovery, DSMB, Emergency Oxygen Provider & Equipment Specialist.
If you are doing the full Travel Track, you will earn 10 PADI Specialties: PADI AWARE Specialty, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Dive Against Debris, DSMB, Navigation, Deep, Photo, Fish ID, Emergency Oxygen Provider, Shark Conservation.
If you come into the program already Open Water Diver certified or Advanced Open Water certified, you will earn fewer specialties. This is based on how the packages are structured and how the classes work together.
Do I need to buy gear to enroll?
No — but gear ownership is a core theme. We have an MSD gear package and will help you build your kit with a one-on-one consultation. Many students start with rental gear and transition over the course of the program.
What's included in eLearning, and do I need PADI Club?
PADI's eLearning covers the knowledge development portions of each course and is additional to the course fee shown. PADI Club membership gives you a discount on eLearning — ask us about the current rate when you enroll. If you've taken a class with Blue Planet, you likely already have PADI Club!
When is the next cohort if I miss the sign-up deadline for this quarter?
We launch new cohorts every quarter. For example, if you miss April, you can join the Q3 2026 waitlist and we'll reach out as soon as registration opens. Contact us to get on the list.
Can I switch tracks after I enroll?
Yes — IF you talk to us early in the program. Depending on what you've completed, we can often adjust your track without a major change to your plan or pricing.
Can I change the classes in my package?
Generally, no. The specialties were chosen because they will improve your overall dive skills and are necessary to create a well-rounded diver. You can always reach out to the shop to ask, but plan that the specialties listed are the ones that you will get.
Where do dives take place?
Pool sessions at a facility here in DC, local open water dives at Lake Phoenix and other nearby dive sites, and on Blue Planet trips anywhere in the world! But note that some destinations are better fits for specific types of diving than others.
This Quarter's Cohort Is Forming Now
Small group. Structured program. A community that dives together. PADI's highest recreational rating — with Blue Planet Scuba behind you. Sign up before April 7, 2026 to start now! Otherwise you'll be waiting until July 2026.
