Earth Day, Every Day: Lessons from Two Dive Centers and One Shared Commitment

Action creates change.

Earth Day

When Earth Day began in 1970 in the United States, it was a response to visible pollution, oil spills, and a growing public awareness that our planet needed protection. What started as a national movement quickly became global. Today, Earth Day is recognized in more than 190 countries, uniting millions of people around a simple idea: we all share responsibility for the health of our planet. As a Green Fins Community Member, Earth Day is not a once-a-year celebration. It is a daily operational mindset. My involvement with two very different dive centers has made that clearer than ever.

Two Eco-Centers, one purpose

I have the privilege of working with two distinct operations: Blue Planet Scuba, a land-based Eco-Center in Washington, DC (with an incredible travel program), and The Scuba Shop SXM, an ocean-based Eco-Center in Sint Maarten. On paper, they could not be more different. In practice, they are deeply connected by one thing: the ocean and waterways.

Here, at Blue Planet Scuba, being land-based means our environmental impact looks different. We focus heavily on education. We have worked to prioritize eco-conscious brands, reduce single-use plastics in-store, and incorporate reef-safe and conservation-focused messaging into every course. Our classroom becomes a platform for environmental stewardship, even though we are not physically next to the ocean. We take this mindset on our group travel, too. All over the world, conservation is on our minds!

At The Scuba Shop SXM, in St Maarten, the impact is immediate and visible. Boat maintenance, moorings, waste management, and direct contact with reefs are daily considerations. Here, implementing Green Fins guidelines means briefings on buoyancy and reef etiquette, careful site selection, eliminating single-use plastics on board, and ensuring that what goes out on the boat always comes back.

Here’s the real TL;DR

Communication is everything. Explaining the why behind decisions makes all the difference. When divers, snorkelers, and mermaids understand how sunscreen chemicals affect coral or how keeping good buoyancy helps protect our slow-growing coral friends, they are more likely to adapt and change their behavior. And even propagate the message forward!
