Caring for Your Gear During Your Dive Trip

You've arrived. The water is perfect. Let's keep your gear that way.

Small habits during your trip make a huge difference in long-term performance.

Rinse Early, Rinse Often

After each dive day:

  • Rinse gear thoroughly in fresh water.
  • Soak regulators. (Remember to secure your dust cap!) Move the hose coverings to prevent buildup between the first stage and the covers.
  • Submerge BCD and push all buttons and pull the dump valves to dislodge any salt.
  • Rinse wetsuits completely.

Salt continues corroding even after you leave the boat!

Keep It Out of Direct Sun

UV Exposure degrades:

  • Rubber hoses
  • Mask skirts
  • Fin straps
  • Neoprene

Hang gear in shaded, ventilated areas whenever possible.

Respect the Rinse Tank

Avoid:

  • Mixing cameras with masks
  • Crushing delicate gear
  • Standing on fins

A little awareness prevents a lot of damage.

Pro tip: Unless the rinse bins are changed regularly throughout the day, avoid using them at the end of the day. Salt and...umm, bodily fluids can build up.

Organize

Make your gear easy to spot:

Mark all your gear with your initials or some other identifiable marks to avoid getting them mixed up and mistaken by another diver! Don't forget your chargeables too: cables, batteries, and docks. A gold or silver Sharpie works well!

Spares

Make sure to build yourself a "spares kit".

  • Mask strap
  • Regulator mouthpiece
  • Snorkel keeper (a hair tie works in a pinch)
  • Weight pocket
  • Zip ties
  • Wetsuit patch kit
  • O rings
  • mini-tool with allen wrenches, etc.
