Adaptive Diving: Making the Ocean More Accessible
Jen Downey May 08, 2026

The ocean is often called the "great equalizer." Below the surface, the constraints of gravity fade away, replaced by a 360-degree freedom that many of us take for granted. But for some, the path to that weightless blue world has historically been blocked by physical or mental barriers.
From May 17th to 24th, we are celebrating the third annual PADI Adaptive Diving Week, dedicated to breaking down those barriers and ensuring that the life-changing magic of the underwater world is accessible to everyone.
Why Adaptive Diving Matters
Globally, about 1.3 billion people live with some form of disability. For many, scuba diving isn't just a hobby; it’s a pathway to healing, empowerment, and newfound independence. As PADI Global Adaptive Consultant Fraser Bathgate says, "Diving changed my life from 'no, you can't' to 'yes, you can'." Whether it’s a veteran finding peace from PTSD or a person with mobility challenges experiencing total freedom in the water, adaptive diving proves that with the right techniques, the water belongs to us all.
How You Can Dive In
Join us on Tuesday, May 19, at 6:30 PM ET for an online seminar on adaptive diving. We’ll talk about what adaptive diving means, how PADI Adaptive Service Facilities support divers with physical, psychological, or mental challenges, and how divers can get involved. Whether you’re a diver, dive professional, family member, caregiver, or someone curious about trying scuba, this seminar is a great place to start. Join us and learn how we can make the ocean more accessible for everyone. insert link to enroll
